Capstone Internship
Billing Intern

I began my internship at the start of January at Dawes Fretzin Dermatology, where I focused on billing and administrative tasks. My responsibilities included entering detailed notes regarding past-due accounts, preparing and organizing patient packets for submission to collections agencies, and uploading and documenting insurance cards within the system to ensure accurate patient records.
Primary Responsibilities and Projects
1. Entering Notes on Past-Due Accounts
I entered notes on past-due patient accounts to keep records updated. This helped me improve my attention to detail and understand how clinics track unpaid balances.
2. Preparing Packets for Collection Agencies
I helped put together packets for accounts being sent to collections. This improved my organizational skills and showed me how clinics handle unpaid bills.
3. Uploading Insurance Cards
I uploaded patient insurance cards into the system. This helped me get better at data entry and understand how important accurate information is for billing.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Through my internship at Dawes Fretzin Dermatology, I developed a strong understanding of the medical billing process and its role in the overall healthcare revenue cycle. I improved my attention to detail and accuracy while handling patient financial records and insurance information, and gained experience managing past-due accounts and assisting with the collections process. I strengthened my organizational and data entry skills by maintaining and updating patient records. This experience also enhanced my time management and professional communication skills. It gave me valuable insight into how administrative tasks directly impact a clinic’s financial health and day-to-day operations.
